Danish designed in 1949, by Hans Wegner this chair achieved international recognition shortly after.  It is perhaps the most famous Danish piece of furniture of them all – which is truely something on its own.  It was initially noticed by American magazine for design and architecture.  This was the beginning of great Danish design.  Interiors magazine, put the very traditional chair on thier cover in 1950 and called it 'the world's most beautiful chair,' catapulting Wegner into international fame

In 1960, the TV company CBS bought twelve copies of the chair for the first live broadcast of the election debate between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon.  It became known simply as, "the Chair”.  It was Kennedy who requested “the chair” as he wanted a comfortable chair for his aching back.  70 million people watched the Wegner chair on live broadcast and it even made mentioned in the newspaper reports the day after.  As a result it also become known as the Kennedy Chair.

Wegner himself referred to it simply as “the round one”

THE DESIGNER

Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007)

Hans Jorgensen Wegner at the age of 17 was apprenticed to a carpenter (H.F Stahlberg).  It was here he developed his first design before attending the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, now know as ‘The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’.

From 1938 to 1942, he worked as a furniture designer in Arne Jacobsen and Erik Moller´s architectural practice.  Throughout his long career, he has designed furniture extensively for Johannes Hansen and Fritz Hansen.

Hans J. Wegner is widely considered to be one of the leading figures in 20th century furniture design - and a driving force in the “Danish Modern” movement that changed the way people looked at furniture in the 1950s and 1960s.

The Royal Society of Arts, London made him an Honorary Royal Designers for Industry in 1959.

"He gave minimalism an organic and natural softness"
